A little bit about these pieces:

I designed these sweet pendants from stones gifted to me from my childhood friend, Jennifer Schickendanz who found them at Moonstone Beach in Cambria, California. She visits there on the anniversary of her son, Jimi’s suicide.

Jimi and other beautiful souls with mental illness endure terrible realities on a daily basis. Hospitals that focus on mental health have been systemically closed or defunded (especially here in California) and those who eventually find help are often kicked out or leave ‘against medical advice’  because they’re afraid or their condition makes it impossible to stay. When left untreated, those with schizophrenia or other mental illnesses are more likely to end up incarcerated, homeless, without medication or other crucial treatments and most importantly, without the support of their loved ones. Upon release from these institutions, those seeking assistance find that resources are either scarce, hard to find or totally non- existent. The laws meant to protect these folks are hopelessly out of date and/ or are in desperate need of reform. Additionally, privacy laws prohibit hospitals from notifying families that their loved ones have been discharged and are likely in eminent danger. These privacy laws are important, however exceptions must be made for those in critical condition. Their lives and well- being should be the priority here rather than protecting finances of for profit institutions. Shame on us for not demanding more to be done to protect the most vulnerable in our community.

Current statistics state that one in four young adults (between 18 and 24) say they have considered suicide in the past month because of the Covid-19 pandemic. The toll is falling heaviest on young adults, caregivers and essential workers.

All proceeds from the sale of these pendants will go to the National Alliance on Mental Illness in West Los Angeles. NAMI helped Jennifer navigate the super complicated mental health system and it is a vital resource for everyone in our community. We all benefit from keeping these folks safe and off the streets.

If you’re thinking about suicide, are worried about a friend or loved one, or would like emotional support, please contact NAMI at 1-800-854-7771 or text ‘NAMI’ to 741741. The National Suicide Prevention lifeline can be reached at 1-800-273-8255.
